Jake Mueller is off to a great start to the Spring 2009 season with the USSSA 12U Majors Palmetto Express. In his first four tournaments (14 games), Mueller leads the team with a .657 batting average (23-for-35) with 27 runs scored and 20 RBI, accounting for a remarkable 33 percent of the team’s runs so far this spring. Batting mostly out of the No. 2-hole, Mueller also has a team-high 14 stolen bases and leads the club with a .745 on-base percentage, while also continuing to play strong defensively at shortstop and second base. The Express most recently captured its third championship of the spring in the April Fools’ Challenge in Lexington, going 5-0, including a 10-3 win over the rival Columbia Heat in the championship game. Mueller’s strong spring comes on the heels of a fall season during which he batted .530 (35-for-66) with 29 runs scored, 20 RBI, 27 stolen bases and a .608 on-base percentage in 25 games. Also this past fall, Mueller played part-time for the Florence-based Palmetto Patriots, batting .457 (21-for-46) with eight walks, five HBP, 17 runs scored, nine RBI, and 14 stolen bases in 22 games. Playing shortstop and second base and batting leadoff, Mueller led the Patriots to a second-place finish at the USSSA Winter Nationals in Orlando, Fla., in late December, batting .500 (6-for-12) with a .625 on-base percentage (10-for-16) in five games.

Mueller is also playing his first season of middle school baseball with St. Mary’s of Augusta, Ga., and is leading the team as a sixth grader with a .444 batting average  and .600 on-base percentage in his first seven games. Mueller has started six games at shortstop and one at second base for St. Mary’s, which is vying to win its third consecutive league championship in 2009. Check out www.stmarysbaseball.com for more.
